That was fast. Shigeru Miyamoto, game designer of legend and creator of Pikmin (and over half of Nintendo’s cast of characters as a whole) spoke to the website Eurogamer last July. “It’s actually very close to completion,” he said. “Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.” This news item was embargoed by the company and forbidden for Eurogamer to post live until this morning
Miyamoto introduced the original Pikmin on Nintendo’s Gamecube in 2001. A strategy/survival game of sorts, players controlled a small elf-like alien with a humungous schnoz and used him to control hundreds of little plant-like creatures that were harvested from the ground. A sequel appeared in 2004, where the Pikmin planet was heavily implied to be Earth, though at what time no one knows.
Given the length of time between Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3 — nine entire years — no one expected Pikmin 4 to be anywhere near “close to completion,” and the news has taken people by surprise. Miyamoto didn’t mention which system the game was being developed for, but if it’s the Wii U that would be even more surprising. My money is on an NX debut.
