They may employ unfair labor practices, but they’re good at one thing: spoiling release dates ahead of time. Huzzah! A listing for the game went up over the weekend, listing the date for Minecraft: Story Mode as October 27 in the US. A separate listing on Amazon UK suggested October 30 in Europe.
Minecraft: Story Mode is exactly that — it’s got a bit of the classic gameplay, but it will mainly have an emphasis on a quickly moving story. According to Telltale’s official description:
“Players will control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, as portrayed by actor Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order is the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.”
The listing also revealed that Minecraft: Story Mode will be an episodic release, and that this October, what we’re actually getting is just the first chapter. You might be confused by this — the game is coming out on all platforms at once, and normally, Telltale releases games in chunks on PC first, then compiles them for console discs. Turns out this time, every disc release will just contain the first chapter and the rest of them will download later as they’re released.
There are those who’ll be fine with this revelation, and there are those purists who will choose to wait for the “Game of the Year” package when they can get everything solidly on disc….if it comes. Whichever you are, the first chapter of Minecraft: Story Mode arrives this Halloween for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, Android, and iOS.
