Entertainment Weekly has published new photos, one each, of The Punisher and Elektra as they will appear in Season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil series. Frank Castle (Punisher) has a tragic background that drove him to crimefighting, but unlike Daredevil or most other superheroes he outright shoots bad guys dead — something Murdock won’t appreciate. People have been wondering who will win the first confrontation between them. After seeing this photo, who do you think?
Castle’s gunplay will be especially relevant given recent events in the news. “We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now,” showrunner Doug Petrie told EW. “If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”
EW’s second photo is of the lovely Elektra Natchios, who readers of the comics (and viewers of the awful Affleck/Garner movie) know becomes Murdock’s girlfriend. In this version, she’s his EX-girlfriend — and someone his current love interest Karen won’t be happy exists. “Matt’s a deeply moral complicated guy and [Elektra]’s just the best bad girlfriend you can possibly have,” Petrie says. “She does everything wrong and attractive, she’s his id, the wild side. Matt is always taming his wild side. Elektra just lets it out. He’s both repulsed and deeply drawn to that.”
The second season of Daredevil will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2016 — a release date has yet to be announced. But we expect it to appear within the first half of the year, as the third Marvel series, Luke Cage, is said to debut later in 2016.
