Video games with explicit holiday themes were never really a thing until 1996. That was the year Sega released Christmas NiGHTS, a festive-themed demo version of their larger NiGHTS game where you collected ornaments instead of stars. Around the same time Donkey Kong Country 3 was released for the Super NES, which contained a secret holiday mode that could be activated by entering the code “MERRY.”‘
Then for a long time, nothing happened.
Until recently, when automatic patches and updates made it possible to dress up a game for a specific season. If you log onto GTA Online today, for example, you should be able to collect Christmas-themed items and get into snowball fights. But that’s a feature that will disappear around January. Does any game have the guts to release a full-on holiday theme that will remain there well out of season?
Hatoful Boyfriend does. To refresh your memory, this is a dating sim where all the potential mates are giant birds. (Your character is supposed to be a human girl.) The original became popular solely for this reason. Now developer Mediatonic has released an explicitly December-themed sequel for PS4 and PC.
Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star takes you back into the world of St. Pigeonations as the sole human girl at a school for gifted birds and every birdie from the first game returns with you! Whilst you get re-acquainted with familiar avian faces, the holidays bring with them a wide range of mysteries to unravel. The feathered figures at the heart of them will shock and surprise. Some will bring delight! Others something much more sinister…
