Sony made a cryptic comment a few days ago about the possibility of backwards compatibility being added to the Playstation 4. Today they brought forth their secret project, but whether it satisfies you or not depends on what you were hoping for.
If you wanted what most people define in their heads as “backwards compatibility,” meaning if you own a PS2 disc you simply insert it into the PS4 and don’t have to rebuy the game….that’s not what this is at all. If you wanted Sony’s definition, which is to resell various PS2 games for $15 apiece, then I hope you like this.
To be fair, there are a number of improvements they made to these games that wouldn’t have happened if it was a simple emulation job. They upped the resolution to 1080p and added trophies, “developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.” They’re also compatible with all PS4 bells and whistles such as Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds and Second Screen. Sony is offering eight PS2 games as of today, including all three GTA games for the system:
Dark Cloud — $14.99
Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
The Mark of Kri — $14.99
Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
War of the Monsters — $9.99
PaRappa the Rapper 2 and King of Fighters 2000 will be added later, with possibly more on the way.
