Two big milestones for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Kickstarter today: for one thing, it crossed the 60% threshold, which means six episodes are now guaranteed to be produced. But the bigger news is that the second Mad has been revealed, and it’s very evident now they went for some intentional geek stunt-casting: it’s Patton Oswalt.
He’ll be playing “TV’s Son Of TV’s Frank,” which is self-explanatory (and the name was his idea), opposite Felicia Day as Kinga Forrester, daughter of Dr. Forrester. I don’t think they have ever played roles opposite each other in the same room; this should be VERY interesting.
Oswalt originally joined the MST3K team as a staff writer, because Joel was apparently a bit too intimidated to directly ask him to star. The intimidation went both ways — Oswalt is a die-hard MST3K fan and never felt worthy enough to ask to appear on camera. Finally Joel timidly asked via text message if he could play TV’s Frank’s son, and Oswalt responded extremely enthusiastically.
There are 11 days to go in the MST3K Kickstarter; at the time of this post they were at $3,350,313. Stack those donations high!
