Beloved by generations of fans the world over, Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) popularised the concept of riffing in which bad media watching is made tolerable by witty jokes at its expense. Interest in continuing the show never died following its unfortunate TV cancellation but rights issues made this impossible, with the groups responsible for the two distinct eras of the show going on to use the internet and theater tours to produce spiritual successors Cinematic Titanic and RiffTrax, respectively.
Now however at long last the rights have reverted, allowing creator and original host Joel Hodgson to use the crowd funding platform Kickstarter to request the aid of fans in producing a new season of episodes. Although this revival is looking to use a new cast (but will keep the iconic look and personalities of Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo), this is intended to be a continuation of the show that for many years a global fan base has followed the advice of and kept circulating the tapes. The minimum goal for the project is $2 million in order to produce three new episodes though with stretch goals to increase the episode count.
The Kickstarter will end Saturday 12th December, with a range of exclusive merchandise and perks available to fans who donate including HD downloads of the new episodes, keychains, posters and the chance to attend premiere events.
