Animator Don Bluth and producer Gary Goldman have worked together on a lot of projects, “some of them iconic,” they say. But the one project they’ve never been able to make is a full-length movie version of their laserdisc-based Dragon’s Lair video game. As of today, they’ve launched a Kickstarter to put together something to show.
It’s important to note that this isn’t a Kickstarter for a finished product. It’s an attempt to crowdfund the expense of a 10-minute short film that will be used as a pitch to make a larger one. This is a much smarter idea than promising a gargantuan video game for $250,000 the way most Kickstarters do, but you do need to be aware you’re not funding the movie itself and it still may not happen. We would always have the short, though.
Bluth has spoken in interviews about remaking Dragon’s Lair as a movie, and was mentioning this desire all the way back in the early part of the century when 2-D animation was still being used in features. One thing neither Bluth nor Goldman specify in the Kickstarter is if this is a pitch for a 2-D or a 3-D film. A lot of people who throw money at this will be hoping to see 90 more minutes of 2-D animation from Bluth before he leaves us, and if the finished product turns out to be CGI, they’ll feel cheated and ripped off (and he’ll be called “Dragon’s Liar”). On the other side, if Don pitches the Dragon’s Lair movie as traditionally animated, he’ll have far fewer investors willing to loan their cash (it’s harsh, but it’s how the world is).
If fully funded (or more) the short will take 21 weeks to complete, during which time backers who pledge $25 or more will get to watch every step. Bluth and Goldman created the original Dragon’s Lair game back in 1983.
