We previously reported that Legendary Pictures has landed the license to produce a live-action Pokemon movie and ever since, they’ve been assembling the team to put it together. Now the project has its director. Here’s what we know:
The movie is based on Detective Pikachu, a game that hasn’t been released in the US or anywhere else outside Japan (and with the sun setting on the 3DS, they’re running out of time). It’s about a hardboiled private eye with a gruff voice and attitude, who happens to also be a Pikachu. It’s going to be very left-field for anyone who hasn’t played the game. The newly-named director, according to Legendary, is Rob Letterman.
The script is being written bu Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman. The former created Gravity Falls and the latter wrote the script for Guardians of the Galaxy. So what has Rob done? His resume is a little more mediocre….he directed the Goosebumps movie and Monsters vs. Aliens, and co-wrote Shark Tale. I hope he wasn’t responsible for the Will Smith Face Fish.
The release window for the Detective Pikachu movie has yet to be revealed.
