The length of time between when a Marvel character catches on and when she gets her own TV appearance is shortening rapidly. It wasn’t too long ago that Ms. Marvel appeared animated for the first time on Avengers: Ultron Revolution, and now Spider-Gwen will be swinging into Ultimate Spider-Man.
In the normal Spider-Man continuity, Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker’s high school girlfriend, who died after an incident involving the Green Goblin and a nasty case of whiplash. Her main reason for existence is to give Peter a reason to mope about how tragic his life is, and occasionally come back as a clone of herself.
Invented by long-running Spider-writer Dan Slott, Spider-Gwen is a relatively new comic that takes place in an alternate, completely-reversed Earth where Gwen is the one who received the radioactive spider bite and became a superhero. (Things didn’t work out so well for Peter, who wound up becoming that world’s version of The Lizard.) Note that she actually calls herself Spider-Woman, because “Spider-Gwen” would make a secret identity pointless. Spider-Gwen is simply the title of the comic and what her fans (in our world) call her.
Her reason for appearing in this cartoon is thus: last year, a USM episode entitled “Spider-Verse” brought together all sorts of Spider-Men from all kinds of continuities. It was the first time Miles Morales made a TV appearance. This weekend a four-part sequel will be airing on Disney XD, and Miles will return — along with Gwen.
Ultimate Spider-Man has never been great, but Spider-Gwen can make anything better. “Return To The Spider-Verse” airs this weekend on Disney XD.
