People have been asking if the attempted revival of the Ghostbusters franchise through the Paul Feig movie could possibly mean a new cartoon show as well. After all, if we have Ecto-Cooler back, why not go all the way?
You should be happy to hear a new Ghostbusters animated series was, in fact, announced today! “Ghostbusters: Ecto Force” is being put into production by Ivan Reitman, director of the original movie. This won’t be the return of Venkman, Stantz, Spengler and Zeddmore — but it won’t be the total-femme version either. The new show will star a team of all-new Busters, and just to be sure nobody from any other continuity can possibly visit, the show is set in 2050.
The premise means the quality could go either way — it’s too early to cast judgment. We only know of Reitman’s involvement; no showrunners or writers have been revealed yet or possibly even decided on. (Reitman, if you’re reading this, take my advice and see if J. Michael Straczynzki is busy. Please?)
“Ghostbusters: Ecto Force” will premiere in early 2018 on whatever network or streaming service wants it the most.
