Documentaries aren’t a genre AMC is known for, but in this case, the subject matter corresponds to the cable network’s recent focus of late. With two Walking Dead shows, an upcoming Preacher show and a reality show set inside a comic book store, it follows logic that the AMC audience might be interested in a six-part series about the history of the comic industry.
Heroes and Villains: The History of Comic Books is the title, and Robert Kirkman himself will be producing through his production company Skybound Entertainment. Kirkman and David Alpert will serve as executive producers; other collaborators include Skybound Film and TV division co-presidents Bryan and Sean Furst, AMC senior vice president of programming Eliot Goldberg, and director of nonfiction and alternative Kelly Nash.
“At the end of the day I am a comic fan first and foremost. I am a lover of the medium and the stories it enables people to tell,” said Kirkman. “I’m excited to partner with AMC once again to bring the stories of some of the most influential people in comics to a television audience.”
According to AMC, Heroes and Villains will provide an in-depth look into the most significant stories, people and events that have shaped the state of comics as they are today (for better or worse). They also mentioned the miniseries “will offer origin stories to the untold history behind iconic characters as well as examine subjects including pop culture, race, gender and sexuality.” Must be talking about William Moulton Marston with those last two.
Heroes and Villains is pegged for a 2017 release.
