ID Software’s revival of the Doom franchise is meant to be a return to what made Doom special when it originally arrived. A punishing test of skill and endurance against the legions of the underworld. That being said, the new game has a mode so tough, no one has beaten it yet, not even on the development team.
Executive Producer Marty Stratton and Creative Director Hugo Martin told IGN that the Ultra-Nightmare setting of the game is the most punishing the game can become. Mainly via one simple twist: Permadeath. If you die once, you will be sent back to the beginning of the game, with your helmet from the previous life being left to mark how far you made it.
The challenge was taken on full force by ID, and yet despite whole departments going full throttle, no one has even come close to completing it.
Gamers will get their chance when Doom releases May 13th.
