As of today the embargo for Star Fox Zero has been lifted, and reviews for the Wii U’s long-awaited space shooter are coming out left and right. While the number of reviewers that outright HATE the game are minimal, they’re in greater number than they’ve been for past Nintendo titles, and none of the reviews posted so far score the game above a 7. The main issue: This is the rare type of game that actually uses the Gamepad in a crucial manner, and they’re not enjoying it.
Jeff Cork of Gameinformer awarded Fox with a 6.75 and said “Star Fox Zero isn’t ever bad, but it’s generally uninspired. It’s a musty tribute that fails to add much to the series, aside from tweaked controls and incremental vehicle upgrades.”
IGN, who is usually nice to everybody, gave the game its highest score to date of 7.5 and thought its faults were workable. “Star Fox Zero’s fun stages and impressive boss fight give me lot of reasons to jump back in and play them over and over, and especially enjoyed them in co-op until I got a hang of juggling two screens myself. I’ve played 15 hours and I still haven’t found everything. Learning to use the unintuitive controls is a difficult barrier to entry, though it comes with a payoff if you can stick with it.”
GamesRadar scored the game down to a 2.5 (out of 10) and said “There is a good game somewhere inside Star Fox Zero, but its forced reliance on the Gamepad’s screen and motion controls cause it to barrel roll right into mediocrity.”
By far the worst review comes from Arthur Giles of Polygon, who posted what he termed a “not-review” because he couldn’t bring himself to finish the game. “It is, to be blunt, a miserable experience, and the idea of playing more fills me with the kind of deep, existential dread I can’t really justify.”
Fans have been waiting for Fox’s return for so long that this news may not deter them from purchasing the game anyway. While many of the reviews state there’s still fun to be had, be warned.
