Sorry for that little burst of hope, folks. Today the lid was blown off Square’s Valkyrie Anatomia, and it was revealed that it is indeed a phone game.

The first Valkyrie game since 2009 was announced with a trailer, but said trailer doesn’t provide much information. It’s entirely in Japanese and shows no footage of the game. According to Siliconera the translation roughly speaks something about approaching death “together,” which fits in with the theme of the first game (Lenneth’s army was gathered from the dead).

Yoshinori Yamagishi, who produced all previous Valkyrie Profile games, is producing this one as well, and they hired Japanese playwright Bun-Oh Fujisawa to write the script. We remarked yesterday that it would be “a lot of effort for a lousy phone game.” Indeed it is.

The original Valkyrie Profile came out for the Playstation 1 in 2000, in limited quantities, and is now horribly expensive (there is a PSP port that costs less). It was an unconventional game that was part side-scroller, part turn-based RPG, part strategy, part puzzle, part…pretty much anything. A sequel was released a few years later on the Playstation 2, and it was simplfied from the original, but still kept its best elements. Since then, the brand hasn’t been since outside of a spinoff released for the Nintendo DS.

What you should take away from this is a sense of gratitude that Star Ocean 5 is actually on consoles.
