When Star Ocean 5 contained extra music tracks from the Valkyrie Profile series, we wondered if something was up. Now it’s been confirmed: a new game in the Valkyrie Profile series is on the way. With the title Valkyrie Anatomia -The Origin, it sounds like it could be a prequel — but no information is available at this present time except for the name.
The original Valkyrie Profile came out for the Playstation 1 in 2000, in limited quantities, and is now horribly expensive (there is a PSP port that costs less). It was an unconventional game that was part side-scroller, part turn-based RPG, part strategy, part puzzle, part…pretty much anything. A sequel was released a few years later on the Playstation 2, and it was simplfied from the original, but still kept its best elements. Since then, the brand hasn’t been since outside of a spinoff released for the Nintendo DS.
But now here’s Valkyrie Anatomia. It hits rather soon, in fact: Square says its Japanese release date is “Spring 2016,” and it’s Spring 2016 right now. Which, actually, is a bad sign that this could be a mobile game. But hopefully not! Yoshinori Yamagishi, who produced all previous Valkyrie Profile games, is producing this one as well, and they hired Japanese playwright Bun-Oh Fujisawa to write the script. That would be a lot of effort for a lousy phone game, so there’s an argument for the console/handheld side as well.
We should find out very soon where this game is going to show up. We’ll probably have to wait longer to find out about an English translation, though.
