Apologies for being a bit late with this one — it’s already all over the Net, but here it is again for the seven or so who didn’t know yet: Indiana Jones 5 was confirmed this afternoon by Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios.
It’s not a surprise that Indiana Jones is coming back — we all figured it would eventually, because there was no way Disney was sitting on THAT hot property. The surprising part is that this is not a reboot. Harrison Ford is coming back yet again, even older than he was in Indy 4. Spielberg is also sitting in the director’s chair once more. The film is penciled in to come out over three years from now.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Horn in the announcement. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
I know Crystal Skull stunk on ice, but the one part I appreciated was that Indy finally got back together with the woman most would agree was his true love, Marion Ravenwood. They were clearly thinking this was the last movie and were wrapping things up. Indy 4 ended with their wedding. Now I’m worried Indy 5 will begin with Ford staring at her tombstone. NO! And then there’s this “Mutt” to deal with.
At least we can hope that it’s going to be better than the previous fridge-nuke of a flick, because unlike last time, Lucas is going to be staying at home and pouting in his recliner instead of getting his way. Indiana Jones 5 will be released July 19, 2019.
