Sony has finally released their first big trailer for the Ghostbusters reboot! Click that box! Quick notes and observations:
Team seems to consist of three Egons and a sassy fat Winston
Slimer confirmed
CG could be better, but we were never getting practical effects for this
There were some physical jokes, but script appears to be keeping the humor mostly to wordplay like the original, which is good
No fat jokes with McCarthy, thank God
The trailer was screened in a private showing to the press last night in Los Angeles, with director Paul Feig and writer Katie Dippold in attendance. Feig admits the familiarity is intentional. “I’d be bummed if I didn’t see the Ecto-1 and all that stuff. So we wanted to make sure we give those nods—but make them our own, and give them their own original origin story. When you see the movie, there will be a lot of things you’re happy to see, but they’re coming at you at a slightly different way.”
At the same time, the pair stated this is definitely a reboot, for this reason: “To say ghosts have existed for 30 years [would be] a different world,” Dippold said. “In the original it’s so fun to see the ghosts unleashed for the first time and we didn’t want to skip over it.” Feig added to this, “I didn’t like the idea of them being handed technology. I wanted to see it developed.”
Ghostbusters comes out July 15.
