It’s true: The Flash is about to Speed Force out of his own network and travel to the land of procedurals and weak comedies. He’ll guest-star in an episode of Supergirl, to air this March.

Ever since it became known that Supergirl was being produced by the same creative team that brings us The CW’s line of superhero shows, some have asked if a crossover might be possible between them. Others have countered by saying this was impossible since Supergirl airs on CBS, while The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow air on The CW.

Here’s what’s really going on: The CW is a joint venture between CBS (the “C”) and Warner Bros (the “W”). There’s really no negotiation or forbidden voodoo involved at all. CBS is technically crossing over with half of itself, and WB owns both shows.

“We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making Supergirl — The Flash and Supergirl are teaming up!” said executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg in a public statement. “We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out. And finally thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone’s enthusiasm and support.”

At the current time, it has not been announced why Barry Allen would need to travel to National City. We’ll likely hear more details about this episode as the airdate approaches — March 28 on CBS.
