A game is about to come out in Japan where Pikachu speaks for the first time beyond his own name. It’s true that the electric rodent has said full sentences in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, but this is something different. We’re hearing him speak, and we’re watching his lips move. There’s more: he’s a gruff-voiced detective.

He’s the star of Great Detective Pikachu, a digital game coming to the Japanese Nintendo eShop on February 3. While some are understandably unsettled by this development, other members of the fanbase could NOT be more thrilled. There is now a Tumblr page inspired by the trailer called “Hard-Boiled Pikachu” that is nothing but snippets of film noir stories written with Pokemon in place of humans. After seeing this, you might feel inspired yourself.

As if to ease the startled ones, the trailer makes it clear there is more than one Pikachu when this Sam Spade version runs across a normal, Ikue Otani-voiced variety.

Who do you want playing Pikachu in the English version? Ron Perlman? Keith David? David Hayter? Nintendo has not confirmed a release outside Japan for Great Detective Pikachu, but given the reaction, I have no reason to believe it won’t happen at some point.
