Last year The CW launched a new site called The CW Seed that specialized in online-only shows. Most were of the cheap variety you expect from web material, with the exception of a fully-animated 30 minute action cartoon set in the Arrow-Flash universe. The cartoon starred the DC superheroine Vixen, who has the power to channel the proportionate strength and speed of anything in the animal kingdom. The first season was just one episode, but was released in seven short parts.
Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that he regrets not airing that Vixen cartoon on the network itself, and plans to air the new “season” (which will consist of another solitary episode) in prime time. In addition, Vixen herself will be crossing over to the third dimension and appearing on Arrow in an upcoming episode, played by her voice actress, Megalyn Echikunwoke. Peodwitz also remarked he hoped Vixen could have her own show someday, or if not, she could perhaps be folded into Legends of Tomorrow (The CW’s third DC-verse show, debuting soon).
Pedowitz made several remarks along these lines throughout the weekend, heavily implying he has Spinoff Fever and is looking for something, anything to continue multiplying his superhero stockade. Earlier during the TCA he expressed desire to see one of the female characters head her own series: “We have, particularly on Arrow, Katie [Cassidy] and Willa [Holland] playing great characters,” Pedowitz said, proving he’s never actually watched Arrow.
We don’t know yet if the second Vixen cartoon will make its premiere as a prime-time whole or in segments on the Seed site, nor when the cartoon will show up (though they guarantee it will be within 2016).
